Does Squarespace Beacon AI Replace an SEO Agency?

Does Squarespace Beacon AI Replace an SEO Agency?

No — not on its own. Beacon AI is Squarespace’s built-in AI assistant. It’s genuinely useful for the mechanical parts of SEO: metadata, alt text, and tracking whether AI search tools mention your site. But it doesn’t do strategy, technical SEO, or content planning. Here’s exactly where it helps, and where you still need a human — or an agency.

What Beacon AI actually does

Squarespace built Beacon AI directly into newer accounts as an AI-powered business assistant. It sits in your dashboard. It quietly handles a few real tasks that most site owners used to skip entirely.

Automated metadata and alt text

Beacon AI can generate page titles, meta descriptions, and image alt text automatically. This matters because these are the exact fields most Squarespace users never fill in. Empty alt text is one of the most common accessibility gaps — we flagged it in our WCAG compliance guide too.

Squarespace itself is upfront that this content is a starting point, not a finished product. Their own guidance says to review every generated description and alt-text draft before saving it. AI output can still be inaccurate or generic.

AIO Scanner: tracking AI mentions

The AIO Scanner is the more interesting piece. It tracks whether your business shows up in AI search results — ChatGPT, Perplexity, and similar tools. That’s on top of traditional Google rankings, not instead of them.

This scanner is part of a broader suite Squarespace calls Design Intelligence. The suite also includes an AI SEO Scanner and AI visibility tracking.

If you’ve read our guide on getting found by AI search, this will sound familiar. Squarespace is now building the same idea directly into the platform. That’s a meaningful shift — most site owners had no way to check this before.

What Beacon AI doesn’t do

A lot of “AI replaces your SEO agency” takes gloss over this part. Here’s what’s still missing.

No content strategy or keyword research

Beacon AI can polish a page you’ve already written. It can’t tell you which topics to cover, or which keywords your competitors are winning. It won’t structure a content calendar around your actual customers either. That’s strategic work, and it requires understanding your business — not just your website.

No technical or off-page SEO

Site architecture, internal linking strategy, and backlink building all sit outside Beacon AI’s scope. So does Core Web Vitals troubleshooting and structured data beyond the basics. These are often the fixes that move rankings the most. They need someone who can actually audit the site, not just generate text for it.

No accessibility compliance

Alt text generation helps, but it doesn’t make a site WCAG-compliant. It has nothing to do with ADA or EAA legal requirements either. Keyboard navigation, color contrast, form labeling, and PDF accessibility all need separate, manual review. Automated tools — Squarespace’s included — catch an estimated 30–40% of real accessibility issues at best.

Generic output needs human judgment

Early users of Squarespace’s AI writing tools have consistently noted the same thing. Default output can feel flat or generic until someone edits it for brand voice. Squarespace has improved this with its Brand Identity settings. But it still takes a person to configure and review it — the AI doesn’t know your brand until you tell it.

So — agency or Beacon AI?

Not an either/or. Here’s the realistic setup for most small-to-mid-sized businesses:

  • Let Beacon AI handle the busywork: first-draft metadata, alt text, and ongoing AI-visibility monitoring
  • Bring in strategic help for: keyword strategy and content planning, technical SEO audits, accessibility compliance, and reviewing anything Beacon AI generates before it goes live

Think of Beacon AI as a very fast intern who never gets tired. It’s good at repetitive tasks. It’s not yet good at judgment calls.

FAQ

Is Beacon AI free with Squarespace? Squarespace includes Beacon AI with newer plans as part of the Design Intelligence suite, so there’s no separate add-on to buy. Availability still depends on your plan and site version.

Does Beacon AI write good SEO copy? It writes usable first-draft copy. Squarespace’s own guidance recommends treating it as a starting point, then manually reviewing everything before publishing rather than using it as a final product.

Can Beacon AI replace dedicated SEO tools like Ahrefs or Semrush? No. Tools like Ahrefs and Semrush handle competitive keyword research and backlink analysis. Beacon AI focuses on your own site’s metadata and AI-visibility tracking instead.

Should a small US or European business rely on Beacon AI alone? For a very simple site, it’s a reasonable starting point. But if organic or AI-search visibility drives real revenue for your business, don’t stop there. Treat Beacon AI as a helpful layer on top of an actual SEO strategy, not a replacement for one.
